What this site knows about you.
I run this site myself. There are no ads, nothing is for sale, and I am not building a profile on anyone. The only thing I actually want to know is whether a person read the thing I wrote.
What follows is what genuinely gets collected and who touches it. It is short because there is not much of it.
What gets collected
- If you just read. Page views are counted by Jetpack Stats, which is run by Automattic. It records which pages were opened and roughly where in the world from. It is not attached to your name.
- If you subscribe. Your email address, held by WordPress.com’s subscription service so it can send you a note when something new goes up. That is the only thing it is for.
- If you comment. WordPress stores the name, email and website you type in, plus your IP address and browser string. Akismet checks the comment for spam. If you use Gravatar, a hashed copy of your email goes to them so your picture can appear.
What I don’t do
- No advertising, and no ad networks of any kind.
- I do not sell, rent or hand over your email address. Not to anyone, not ever.
- No embedded video players. The Research page shows YouTube thumbnails, but those are copies stored on this server — YouTube does not know you looked at the page until you click through.
- No third-party trackers beyond the stats counter described above.
Who else is involved
Three companies, and only because the site runs on their machinery:
- Automattic — Jetpack statistics, the subscription list, Akismet spam filtering and Gravatar.
- DreamHost — the company whose server this site sits on.
- Any site you click through to from here. Once you leave, their rules apply and not mine.
Your choices
- Every subscription email carries an unsubscribe link, and it takes effect immediately.
- Ask me to delete a comment, or your email address, and I will do it. No reason required.
- If you would rather not be logged at all, read without commenting or subscribing. Nothing on this site requires an account.
This page describes the site as it actually runs today. If that changes, this page changes with it.
Reaching me. Anything on this page — a request to delete a comment or an email address, a question, a correction — goes to jimmy@o-matic.io. One person reads it, and that person is me.
Watch. Observe. Protect. I Am.
